In 1818, on Christmas Eve in 1818, the organ at St. Nicholas Church in the small alpine village called Oberndorf had broken. It was at that time, a friend of Joseph Mohr, Franz Xavier Gruber composed the melody of the poem in mind and it was intended for a guitar.

On December 24 th, 1818, Father Joseph Mohr walked over to Franz Gruber’s home. He asked the organist to take a Christmas poem the pastor had written two years earlier and set it to music. Mohr and Gruber would sing the melody, the choir would join in, and the accompaniment would be for solo guitar played by Mohr himself.
